Thatchers are rare in Parliament. Thatch, though, was the subject of a strange debate last week. Sir George Young was explaining the absurd impasse into which people with thatched roofs have been forced. The wrong kind of straw is the bureaucrats’ cry English Heritage insists that thatch should be renewed with exactly the same kind of straw that is on a roof when it needs renewing. In Hampshire some houses are thatched with long straw. But in the past year there has not been enough long straw available.
