It wouldn’t be a fair without the food. From cotton candy and caramel apples to deep-fried corn dogs and lemon shake-ups, fairs are chock-full of our fatty favorites. Some die-hard fairgoers don’t bother with rides at all and make a bee-line to the deep fryer. But unbeknownst to many, the amount of calories packed in these greasy goodies is scarier than hanging upside down on the “Ring of Fire.” You’re probably thinking to yourself, “How bad can a pretzel be?” Try 340 calories, without the cheese dip. A snow cone? A whopping 270 calories. With two nights left of the Heart of Illinois Fair, there’s still plenty of time to weigh your options. For some dieting daredevils, the once-a-year elephant ear might be worth ditching the scale for a few days. But for those who refuse to pull out the sweatpants, don’t fret. There are still choices. Instead of tasting everything on the menu, pick just one treat or share with a friend. Or if you’re one of the lucky few with willpower of steel, fight the urge and hit up the Subway drive-through on your way. But ignoring the midway munchies is easier said than done.   ...
