The local weathermen called for 75 degrees and sunshine, and the rays couldn’t have shined brighter for the Palmyra-Macedon girls tennis team Wednesday. With no clouds in the sky, the Red Raiders battled visiting Canandaigua in a Finger Lakes East matchup of unbeatens and emerged with a 3-2 cliffhanger of a win. Entering the final match of the evening — second singles — the two perennial powerhouses were locked in a 2-2 stalemate. Anticipation, adrenaline and nervousness couldn’t have been higher when Pal-Mac’s Marie Black and CA’s Kelly McWilliams took the court. McWilliams, a New York state tournament participant last season, took the first set in convincing fashion, 6-2. But between serves, Black kept her composure. “Marie handled the pressure very well,” said Red Raider head coach Dave Beaucage. “She made very good decisions as to when to go for shots, and took her time.” With the match and leadership of the FL East standings on the line, Black knocked out the next two sets 7-5, 6-2 to catapult the Red Raiders to what was a first-time win over CA for many. “It was as close as you can get for a tennis match, that’s for sure,” said CA coach Dave Ducharme. “Marie Black had a tremendous comeback and kept her composure.
