Landing on the front of a Wheaties box may be every athlete's dream, but Sudbury native Jarrod Shoemaker never thought it would happen. "We joked about it and I said something like, 'Right, that will never happen to me,"' he said. Even when Shoemaker's agent phoned and told him Wheaties was about to happen, the triathlete thought it was a joke. "The triathlon was not mainstream enough," said the 25-year-old, now living in Maynard. Shoemaker was the first American athlete to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The triathlon has only been an Olympic sport since 2000, and the United States has yet to win the triathlon. Canada took the gold in 2000 and New Zealand did it in 2004. "It's been cool," said Shoemaker. "Every Olympic race has been extremely close. The Olympic Committee loves the sport and thinks it's a great international sport. It's good for 20 or 30 different countries." Shoemaker says being on the front of the "Breakfast of Champions" shows how the triathlon has grown. "I also think it's pretty cool that General Mills (maker of Wheaties) cares about a healthy lifestyle," he said. But finding a box of the special edition Wheaties may not be easy. Dana Wilson, grocery manager at Sudbury Farms said he's confident the Boston Post Road store will get a shipment of the special boxes, but he doesn't know when.
