Gary Sutter, of Navarre, and Ron Ruffner, of Louisville, have it down pat. They place their lawn chairs somewhere near the fifth row during the Summer Concert Series in downtown Massillon; head over to Smiley’s to get a bite to eat; and arrive back to the makeshift concert area on Lincoln Way East. During the first edition of the series – a scheduled performance two weeks ago by Little Anthony and the Imperials – the rain poured its misery on the crowd leaving them to search for drier surroundings. For Sutter and Ruffner, it was under the canopy at Grand Mill Centre. And two weeks later while waiting for ’50s and ’60s rock revue, The Van-Dells, they found themselves under the same canopy. Late Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued severe a thunderstorm warning that was followed by reports of hailstorms and strong winds across Western Stark County. The dark clouds did not have mercy on the crowd before the show, but Sutter was holding out hope. “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings,” Sutter joked about the rain letting up. Unfortunately, it kept on strong and the series experienced its second cancellation due to inclement weather. “What can you do?” Ruffner said. “You can’t do anything when Mother Nature doesn’t want to cooperate with you.” As Massillon police were politely asking folks to pack their lawn chairs, Ralph Willhelm and his family were taking shelter under the marquee at the Lions Lincoln Theatre. “ ... |
