Here’s my initial take on the Nike-sponsored LeBron camp in Akron: First, organizers specifically kept the numbers low - around 80 - to facilitate more individual instruction. Almost all are solid, high-major prospects. Secondly, there is not as much overwhelming star power the way there was last year. Some of that may have to do with the fact Lance Stephenson of Lincoln and Dexter Strickland of St. Patrick’s were both at USA Basketball’s 18-and-under trails. But 6-9 forward Derrick Favors of Atlanta, 6-9 Renardo Sidney of Los Angeles and guard Kenny Boynton of Pompano Beach, Fla. - three more of the top eight prospects in the class - weren’t in attendance, participating in either RBK U. in Philly or the adidas team tournament in Cincinnati. The biggest names nationally in attendance: 6-10 center DeMarcus Cousins of LaFlore (Mobile, Ala.) and guard John Wall of Word of God Academy in Raleigh, N.C. The best player there, according to Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop: 6-10 John Henson of Round Rock, Texas, who committed to North Carolina as a junior last spring. The rest of the top five: Cousins, Wall, 6-5 Harrison Barnes of Ames, Ia., and 6-9 Donte Taylor of National Christian Academy in Ft. Washington, Md. Interestingly, there are not many area players in the mix, other than 6-6 rising sophomore Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick’s, rising junior Doron Lamb of Bishop Loughlin (pictured), rising senior guard Durand Scott of Rice and risin ... |
