Jeff Sarahs knew his team could not afford a loss. With the Cranberry League regular season ending on July 17, the South Shore Warriors (16-9) entered Tuesday’s game against the South Side Dirt Dogs (5-21-1) clinging to a one-point lead over the idle Canton A’s for the fifth and final spot to make the Stan Musial State Tournament, the Cranberry postseason. But Sarahs, South Shore’s starter, took care of business, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout with six strikeouts, in a 3-0 victory for the Warriors at Memorial Field in Hanson. “It was pretty big,” Sarahs said. “Every game we go we want to win, and one more game under our belt puts us that much higher (in the standings).” The Whitman native was modest about his performance. “I thought my control was a little off today,” Sarahs said, “but I battled through it, tried to stay ahead in the count and mix it up to keep them off-balance. And we got the win.” South Shore manager John Pesente also knew the importance of the victory. “Every game is big right now,” Pesente said. “We could end up anywhere from sixth place to second place, that’s how closely bunched up the five teams are right now.” Though the Warriors scored three runs in the game, only one of them was the result of a ball being put in play, when Mike Bradley hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
