South Florida’s girls are rocking the leaderboard at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Hartford (Conn.) Golf Club. It’s another testament to the might of junior girls golf down here. Pembroke Pines’ Kyle Roig (right), the Sun-Sentinel’s reigning girls’ Golfer of the Year from American Heritage, leads after the first round of stroke-play qualifying at 4-under-par 67. It’s the national championship with a field of 156 from across the land and yet four among those tied for eighth or better are from South Florida. Boca Raton’s Madison Pressel, 17, baby sister to LPGA Tour pro Morgan Pressel, shot 69 and is in fifth place. She was quoted on the United States Golf Association website saying it’s an event that gives her a chance to trump her sister, who never won it. Roig, 14, was quoted saying she’s going for medalist honors. They were both featured prominently in the usga.org website’s first-round story. Alexis Thompson, 13, the Coral Springs’ dynamo who nearly made the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open last month, is tied for eighth with Plantation’s Lindy Duncan at 71. Duncan made the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur two seasons ago. The leaderboard at the U.S. Girls’ Junior gives you a deep appreciation for the depth of talent in South Florida.
