BY DAVE PARRACK At gamer.blorge.com As we sit here today, do you think the Playstation 3 has any chance of beating the sales total of the PS2 or PS1? No, didn’t think so. But Kaz Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment does think so, or at least, he’s very hopeful. This is despite the reality of the situation, which sees the Wii and Xbox 360 massively ahead in terms of lifetime sales. Sony had a brilliant start to their life as a games console manufacturer, when it released the original Playstation, which completely changed the gaming landscape back in the mid-90s. Then it built on that success, and the many gamers loyal to the brave new brand, and released the PS2 at the turn of the millennium. Which proved to be even more successful. Now, here we are 8 years later, and the aptly titled PS3 is selling in average, but not exactly superb, numbers. Okay, it’s been helped by a good June in the US, where the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 pushed it to 3rd place in the monthly hardware rankings behind the Nintendo DS and Wii, but one good month does not make for a great selling console. In an interview with the Financial Times, Hirai spelled out his aim for the PS3 to exceed the sales total of both the PS1, and PS2. These consoles sold 102 million, and 140 million units respectively, which puts the Playstation total to date of around 14.4 million units to shame.
