It was probably one of the more anti-climactic title wins on record for any Swampscott team. There was no overtime winner, no big celebration at the pitcher’s mound, and nothing went in after a buzzer. Instead, it was more like this – keep the team dry in a room together, walk in and say “Congratulations, you’ve won the game.” This is how a team of 12-year-old Swampscott girls found out that they won the July 3 game for the District 16 Little League softball championship. They were still cheering like it was a walk-off win, anyways. The locals won their first banner since 2005. It wasn’t a technicality they won on, though. The Swampscott team did defeat Wyoma (of Lynn), 6-2, on the field. It wasn’t a full six-inning game, due to Mother Nature and her recent affinity for lightning storms, but it was an official game win. And a little revenge from 2007. “Last year, we were unfortunate to meet Wyoma in the district finals, and they had great hitting, great pitching, great defense,” said Henry Wong, manager of the Swampscott squad. “With the team we have right now, we’re three deep in pitching, and we have to hit a little more consistency, and we have to deal with the baserunning also. “But I have high hopes that we’ll go deep in the tournament,” Wong added.
