| Presentation-sharing site SlideShare Inc. landed blue-chip venture backer Venrock in a modest $3 million round that allows the company to continue developing its technology and marketing of its social media platform. One-year-old SlideShare already boasts investors and advisors including Google Inc. [ GOOG ] chief economist Hal Varian, former Apple Inc. [ AAPL ] chief evangelist Guy Kawasaki, celebrity rich guy Marc Cuban and other influential Internet entrepreneurs. Bringing in Venrock, the legacy Rockefeller family venture fund as its first institutional investor, further strengthens the San Francisco company's pedigree.
SlideShare founder Rashmi Sinha will put the new money to use in additional product development and marketing to promote sharing of PowerPoint type presentations as the next step in viral communication of non-textual information. The company's technology allows a rapidly growing user base users to easily upload slideshows for free, and tag, download, or embed presentations into their own content. -- Clifford Carlsen
