| Quiet, dignified and beautifully maintained, the Texas State Cemetery in Austin is the final resting place for scores of the state's most accomplished and legendary citizens since it was established in 1851.
Its centerpiece is the Medal of Honor Monument dedicated to the 83 native-born or adopted Texans who have earned the nation's highest award for valor.
Last Saturday Don and I were guests at the dedication of the cemetery's first Vietnam Veterans' Monument which joins monuments to WWII veterans, 9/11, Purple Heart Recipients and Gold Star Mothers, among others.
The gray and black granite monument serves as a pedestal for a trio of bronze American soldiers in advance formation by sculptor Gilbert Beall .
Four Recipients, David McNerney , Bob O'Malley , Clarence Sasser and Mike Thornton --all Vietnam veterans--attended as did Gov. Rick Perry .
The program was four or five speakers too long when you have a Marine Honor Guard at attention for well over an hour in the 80-degree heat. The Texas State Cemetery Committee members never has or have forgotten what it's like to wear a tight-collared dress uniform in the beating sunshine.
For me the event produced mixed feelings, which were reinforced today as I read the on-line coverage by The Austin American-Statesman . The article didn't even mention the presence of the four Recipients, and instead fell back on the tired, cliched, left-wing Vietnam veteran ... |
