I missed most of last night’s game, as I went to see Reel Sports Fan’s screening of Don Larsen’s perfect game (more on that in a future Squawk). In the meantime, I wanted to talk about Jorge Posada’s comments to the media about catching, or should I say not catching. Jorge seems a tad snippy, doesn’t he, over the fact that he hasn’t played a game at catcher in the past six games? He even did his trademarked “ask him” comment when reporters asked him about Joe Girardi’s decision to play Jose Molina instead. Here are some of Posada’s words: “I like to catch. Okay?” Posada said. “I’m in the lineup and I’m happy that I’m in the lineup, but I like to catch. I’m a catcher. I’m not a first baseman and I’m not a DH. I like to catch, so I’m looking forward to catching (today).” Posada may like to catch, but the opposition also likes to run off him. Since he came back from his shoulder injury, he’s thrown out exactly one baserunner out of 17, while Molina has thrown out an MLB-leading 24 of 50 players attempting to steal this season. More from today’s paper: Posada insists his arm is 100%, but Girardi believes it’s still not where it was before the injury. Posada said that Girardi knows how he feels about playing behind the plate, but it seems that when the Yankees play speedy teams such as Boston or Tampa Bay, the manager’s preference is to keep Molina’s arm on the field.
