Newly elected council members Jackie Abrams and Bill Schmidt were sworn in at the La Junta City Council meeting on Monday, June 16. Abrams, who was appointed earlier this year, replaced Councilman Don Martin who died of cancer. Schmidt replaced Cheryl Lindner, who resigned April 21 of this year. Before the meeting was called to order, City Attorney Dean Malouff called a public meeting regarding the opening of a new liquor store called Empire Liquors. Rodger Witt intends to open the store at 601 E. First Street by July 20.  As part of the public meeting Malouff asked if anyone wanted to speak for or against the new business. Bryan Bryant of the Small Business Development Center spoke on Witt’s behalf saying that he had worked with Witt for eight months. “He is well-intended and well-studied,” Bryant said. Witt and Bryant conducted a study and found that sales were being lost outside the community so a need for a liquor store was established as a result. Keith Goodwin, owner of Computer Networking Solutions, wanted to vouch for Witt on the technical side. In his store Witt will use a scanner for driver’s licenses. This piece of equipment will enable clerks to easily determine the correct age and identification of potential customers. The council approved the licensing of the store unanimously.
