Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., has asked that a moratorium on the proposed expansion of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site be extended another year. In a letter to Military and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Johnson, Salazar asked the moratorium continue into 2009. The Army has said they want to possibly expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site by an additional 435,000 acres. In his letter, Salazar said until the Army completes reports associated with the proposed expansion — a detailed report on its plans, the need for the expansion and the possible side effects of its plan, the moratorium should remain in place. Salazar had requested, through an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, the information from the Army. The report is due by the end of July and, according to Salazar, has not been completed. Once the report has been finalized, the Government Accountability Office will have up to 180 days to review the report’s findings and the public will have 90 days to comment. “This process will extend into the next fiscal year and likely the next calendar year,” Salazar said. Salazar requested that the moratorium be extended with the following language in the subcommittee bill be included: “None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this title may be used for any action that is related to or promotes the expansion of the boundaries or size of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, C ...
