Here's a mailer from 20th CD freshman Democratic Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand in which she touts the fact that she was the first member of the state's congressional delegation to oppose former Gov. Eliot Spitzer's failed proposal to let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses. An interesting approach, albeit not surprising, given that the district is overwhelmingly Republican. Gillibrand isn't the only candidate up for re-election this fall to be invoking the legacy of the disgraced governor. She shares that distinction with state Sen. Serphin Maltese, who recently went on the air with his first TV spot of the campaign , in which Spitzer figures heavily. For the record, the Gillibrand mailer didn't come to me from Gillibrand's campaign. It was sent out by one of her GOP opponents, Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell, along with an accompanying press release that accused the congresswoman of "playing games with border security" (she evidently didn't sign on to a petition that would allow the very legislation she's touting in the lit to come to the floor) and wasting taxpayer dollars on politically motivated mail. ...
