Roger Lempke wants Nebraska's citizens to be a "second body" in the Legislature's check-and-balance system. Lempke, who retired as adjutant general of the Nebraska National Guard last November, is now executive director of the Platte Institute for Economic Research. Lempke hopes to use the Platte Institute to help citizens across the state become that second body. One of the goals of the Platte Institute is to make state and local government actions more transparent. To help that process along, the Platte Institute will hold a Transparency Conference on Nov. 18. The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union. The luncheon keynote speaker will be John Stossel, ABC news correspondent and co-anchor of 20/20. Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn will talk about the Web site, NebraskaSpending.com, which is a searchable Web site that helps people track government spending. UNL professor Charlyne Berens, who has written two books about Nebraska's Unicameral, will talk about the importance of transparency when it comes to the Legislature. Platte Institute senior policy analyst Nicole Barrett will unveil the transparency web site, which will help citizens track legislation, how their senator has voted on legislation and to do topical sorting of legislation.
