Some kids might try to worm their way out of doing dishes, but not 17-year-old Ann Schmeling. For her, it’s a great way to bond with her family. “I don’t particularly like washing dishes, but as a family, it goes faster,” she said. The Boylan student’s surprising choice for her favorite family activity recently won her Profile: Ann Schmeling Age : 17 City: Rockford School: Senior, Boylan Central Catholic High School Family: Parents, Lynn and Mark; brothers, Tom, 20 and Matt, 16; sister, Sarah, 19 Hobbies: Lifeguarding, spending time with friends, reading the top spot for high school juniors in the 12th Annual Olive Garden Pasta Tales national essay writing contest. The program was created to help kids improve their writing skills. Entries were judged by Olive Garden and the Quill and Scroll Society of the College of Journalism and Communication at the University of Iowa. Schmeling’s three-paragraph essay about washing dishes with her brothers and sister was one of more than 28,000 contest entries. In the end, her work won her a $500 savings bond and dinner with her family at Olive Garden. Schmeling, who hopes to one day be a physician assistant, came across a notice for the contest while searching the Internet for college scholarships.
