E3 might seem an odd occasion for an episode of Retronauts, but what the hey -- this was an odd E3, so it evens out. Our new episode isn't a retrospective about E3, though; it's a look at all the old games (or new games pretending to be old) at this year's show. In fact, I'd say somewhere between one-third and one-half of the hottest games on display (using the very scientific metric of "what does everyone seem enthusiastic about?") were either from many years ago or else tapped into a primal core of nostalgia for bygone days. We discussed: Kirby Super Star Ultra - Super NES, 1997 Retro Game Challenge - Faux Famicom/NES c.1984-1990 Wario Land Shake It! - direct sequel to a 2001 handheld game, on a console Mega Man 9 - channeling 1989's NES hit Mega Man 2 Chrono Trigger DS - Super NES, 1995 Dragon Quest IV - NES, 1990 Bionic Commando Rearmed - remake of a 1988 NES game Galaga Legions - "true" sequel to a 1981 arcade game Yumi's Odd Odyssey - PSP remake of a 1997 PS1 remake of a 1994 Super Famicom game Also, I totally forgot to mention Populous DS , but it's looking pretty hot, too. As hot as a 20-year-old strategy game can, anyway. And I guess Street Fighter IV deserves a mention, too!
