A draft report says two Cabarrus County cities may have overestimated water needs to justify plans to take water from the Catawba and Yadkin rivers. The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday the report states that Cabarrus' maximum daily water demand in 2035 would be 36 percent less than Concord and Kannapolis estimated two years ago. North Carolina officials last year approved plans by the cities to pipe water from the rivers. That approval is being appealed and South Carolina has sued North Carolina in the U.S. Supreme Court over the proposal. Opponents worry because the water wouldn't be returned to the same rivers. The Water & Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County commissioned the report and said it will spend more than a year to verify the new numbers. The report says the transfer is still needed. ...
