The question of the importance of libraries in the Internet age may be answered by voters come November. The passing of a $7 million Proposition 2 and half override will fund a new facility, while some questioning the library's relevance. Board of Selectmen Vice Chairman Cliff Snuffer said proponents of the 33,000-square-foot, two-story public library must encourage this discussion. At a recent meeting at which the board approved attaching the library override question to the Nov. 4 ballot, Snuffer said backers have to "tell a story" to voters about why libraries are essential. He then wished them luck in asking for money during the current economic downturn. "People are going to libraries more than ever," said Celeste Bruno, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. According to statistics compiled by the board, 31 million people visited a state public library in 2007 - an increase of six million from 2001. People also checked out 52 million books in 2007, seven million more than in 2001. "We've been mobbed here," said Norma Jean Cauldwell, assistant director at the Walpole Public Library, describing how it's standing-room-only in the Children's Room at times. The local statistics, too, support the library's continuing appeal, said Library Director Jerry Romelczyk.
