He'll begin a six-year term on Aug. 1.
The synod includes about 200 churches in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.
Rimbo is pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan. He won a close vote on a fifth ballot over the Rev. Bob Wollenburg, who serves on the staff of the synod.
