Andrew Azer will become the new chairman of the town’s Finance Committee, effective Tuesday. Azer was unanimously elected chairman at the committee’s meeting Tuesday night. He thanked the committee members for their support. “I hope I do well,” he said after the vote. A certified public accountant, Azer, 34, has been a member of the Finance Committee for the past five years and a town meeting member for seven years. He was a candidate for selectman in the April town election, finishing third in a field of six candidates for two seats. He is the brother of School Committee Chairman Larry Azer. Arthur Goldstein, who was chairman of the committee for the past four years, has decided to leave the committee at the end of his term. He has been a member of the Finance Committee since 1995. “It’s time,” Goldstein said of his decision to leave the committee. He thanked his fellow committee members for their support over the years, especially the four former committee chairmen he served with. Goldstein said he plans to devote more time to working with the Service Corps of Retired Executives. Azer thanked Goldstein for his leadership during his years as chairman. Jim Burke will remain as the committee’s vice chairman. The Finance Committee reviews spending requests from town departments and makes recommendations to town meeting, which has the final say on all town spending. ...
