Stevens Point --  Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said today the party's prospects for the fall are strong and said nominee-to-be John McCain has done a good job uniting the party. "(He's done) much better than the Democrats can do or will do," Hunter told reporters here at the state GOP convention. Hunter noted recent polls have shown McCain with 90% support among Republicans nationally, while exit polls in recent Democratic contests show 30% or more of Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters are not planning to back Barack Obama, the expected party nominee. "Obama will have trouble bringing it back together," Duncan said. "(Some) 16-17 million people have voted for Hillary Clinton." Here are some additional exceprts from Hunter's speech to the convention and his post-speech conversation with reporters: -- On the appeal of McCain vs. the remaining Democrats : "We have a lot of Reagan Democrats crossing over to support Sen. McCain." The Democratic candidates, he said, have promised bigger government: "I'm not sure the American people want that." Hunter added: "(McCain) is appealing to the center-right part of the country.
