America’s third largest landline telephone operator, Qwest Communications, has started reselling Verizon Wireless cell phone services throughout its residential service area. Qwest revealed in May that it was ending its partnership with Sprint Nextel Corp., in favour of a new five-year agreement with Verizon Wireless. The telephone operator will soon start contacting existing Qwest Wireless customers (who use Sprint), and encouraging them to switch to comparable Verizon-based plans. This is a significant blow to Sprint, which has struggled to retain customers ever since its merger with Nextel in 2005. About 824,000 of Sprint’s 53.8 million subscribers purchased their services throughout Qwest, which lacks its own mobile phone network, and must partner with other carriers in order to offer wireless alongside its fixed-line voice and broadband services. ...
