One of Downers Grove’s highly traveled side streets is up for a major makeover, but the project likely won’t be completed this year as the village continues to negotiate the acquisition of some property. The project, which is expected to cost $4.1 million, will take place on Prairie Avenue from Belmont Road to Fairview Avenue. Along with the reconstruction and resurfacing of the road, it also will include the installation of new traffic signals at Prairie Avenue and Main Street, the replacement of sanitary sewers between Washington and Elm streets and storm water main replacement. The storm water main replacements are scheduled to begin later this month or in early August. In order to make the improvements at Main Street and Prairie Avenue the village must acquire some privately owned land. Doug Kozlowski, spokesman for the village, said property acquisition negotiations are taking place. “There’s been some issues relative to not being able to get it done this year due to land acquisition delays,” Kozlowski said. “We have a situation where to make some improvements needed at the intersection of Main Street and Prairie Avenue it requires some right of way acquisition on property that is currently privately owned ... so widening can take place at those intersections to accommodate turn lanes.” Kozlowski said part of the project is being paid for with a grant from the Federal Surface Transportation Program.
