Another string of garbage can fires in Brookfield is leading to an invesigation. Village Manager Rick Ginex said foul play is suspected, and the Brookfield Police Department is investigating the origin of the four fires.  “All the fires occurred around some of the same time periods, or within a few hours of each other,” Ginex said. Brookfield police officers said at about 11:15 p.m. July 15, residents on the 900 block of Sheridan Avenue reported their garbage can on fire when they went into their backyard to fix a light fixture. The next night at about 11:45 p.m., officers saw a garbage receptacle in the parking lot of the Cornerstone Community Church, 9008 Fairview Ave., fully ablaze, according to police reports. Police said charring occurred to the brick wall and metal pipes, which house electrical lines from the alley. Two additional garbage fires were set at about 11:45 p.m. July 17 on the 9000 block of Fairview Avenue, according to reports. Charges will be filed as arson, which is a felony offense, for the fires set in the garbage cans if the perpitrator is an adult, Ginex said. “It is up to the (Cook County) state’s attorney if they feel that is warranted,” Ginex said. If the offender is found to be a child, the charges might not be as extreme, he said. These fires come after an 11-year-old Brookfield boy set six garbage cans on fire April 27 on the 3200 and 3300 blocks of Arthur Avenue, according to police. Right now, offic ...
