For a while, it looked like 2008 could be the year Abington Legion broke free of the chains. But now with only four games left in regular season play, Post 112 finds itself once again watching its postseason hopes slip away. After three straight losses to Hawkeye (in a Sunday doubleheader) and Brockton (Monday), Abington has fallen to 6-9-1 on the year, putting them four points out of the playoff hunt with four games to play in the regular season. “It’s not looking good,” head coach Peter Serino said of his team’s playoff prospects. “We’re young and inexperienced. We’ve lost a lot of close games and that’s coming back to hurt us right now.” Closing the door has no doubt proved problematic for Post 112, as Abington is 1-4 this season in games decided by one run. Two of the team’s three games last week were decided by two runs or fewer. Post 112 hung in with Brockton throughout their game Monday night, as Mike DiCenzo threw a full seven innings on just two earned runs. But down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Abington stranded runners with the bases juiced to end the game. “Mike (DiCenzo) was terrific,” Serino said. “He mixed things up well and threw a great game, but we just couldn’t get behind him offensively.” The loss to Brockton followed back to back losses in a doubleheader outing with Hawkeye on Sunday.
