First place in the "let's think about skiing contest," for the summer of 2008, goes to Mary Eloranta , head coach of the fledgling Peak Nordic Ski Club that trains out at Lapham Peak , in the Town of Delafield. Eloranta was the first to hit my inbox with a ski-related note when she passed along an announcement about informational meetings for prospective Peak team skiers. The first session is Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., in the Evergreen Shelter at the Lapham recreation area. The next session will be in the same place on Oct. 20. Peak Nordic has evolved from the Waukesha West Ski Team and extends the opportunity to ski competitively to high school and middle school students throughout the area. The team will train five nights a week and compete throughout the season, ending with the State Championships in Minocqua. Similar teams combining athletes from various schools are the core of the high school racing in Wisconsin. For the 2008-'09, Peak Nordic also formalized the program for youngsters in kindergarten through 6th grade. Directed by Roy Nilsen, the youths will ski on Sunday afternoons, learning more then competing. "The main thing is to get the kids together to have fun on skis," Nilsen said in an interview last winter, as the program started. "We'll incorporate instruction and drills in game formats."
