| This had all the markings of a disastrous Vicente Padilla performance in the first inning. He allowed five runs (two earned) and easily could have become unraveled.
And the Padilla of old might have gone into the tank and taxed an already tired bullpen. But the fella wearing No. 44 this year bowed up and responded with three straight shutout innings.
Padilla has thrown 73 pitches, so there's no reason to think that he can't get through the sixth. And he's got a good shot to go to 6-2 for the season by winning his fourth straight start.
