| BAND OF BROTHERS: The Columbia Jazz Orchestra will celebrate its four-year Speakeasy residency on Monday. That’s longer than the shelf life of many of this town’s bands and far longer than any of the theme nights hosted by local clubs. And the music — big band jazz — is the rarest part of Columbia Jazz Orchestra’s improbable run. Robert Gardiner , a saxophonist and the orchestra’s organizer, says the band, made up of USC professors, members of the South Carolina Philharmonic and area band directors, continues because “it’s the kind of music that we all like to play.” “Monday is an off night and most of us are available, so it’s a good opportunity to play music that otherwise we wouldn’t get to play,” Gardiner said. ... |
