There’ll no summer vacation for these musicians. This weekend will be the first performance of the West Suburban Symphony Festival Orchestra, a summertime ensemble based in Wheaton. The debut show will be at 8 p.m. Friday, July 19 at Edman Memorial Chapel, located on the campus of Wheaton College at Washington and Franklin streets. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for teenagers. This will be the fourth group sponsored by the West Suburban Symphony Society, which also is behind the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Singers. The newest group is a mix of musicians from the symphony orchestra, on break after the end of its regular season last month, as well as musicians who are only available to play in the summer, such as college students, said conductor Peter Lipari. “We’re hoping to open with a big splash,” he said. The group will perform the cantata “Carmina Burana,” which leads off with the famous “O Fortuna” movement. “We’re hoping to wow them, and this is the piece to do it,” Lipari said. Thanks in part to its staccato rhythm, towering vocals and crescendo finish, that piece has become pop culture shorthand for intensity, featured in countless films and appearing most recently in commercials for the 2008 NBA finals.
