| A newly-elected lawmaker for Zimbabwe's opposition MDC has been arrested. Heya Shoko, who won a seat in Masvingo province previously held by President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PFs, is believed to be the first opposition MP arrested since the 28 March elections. A colleague of Mr Shoko's said he was arrested in connection with post-election violence in his district. Zimbabwe is still in a state of political uncertainty following Robert Mugabe's defeat in the presidential elections. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai won the ballot but did not manage to secure an overall majority. A second round of voting is necessary but a date has not yet been set. Mr Tsvangirai has announced that he will participate but only on condition that foreign observers and media be allowed to monitor the election. Mr Mugabe's government has refused to agree to the conditions. ... |
