It all happens fast and furiously at training camp, so please try to keep up. Here are a few more tidbits from Opening Day: • Tom Coughlin seemed excited about newly signed Shane Olivea, the former Chargers RT who recently had a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy overturned by the league. “We have been kind of researching this for quite a while,” Coughlin said. “We worked him out the other day, he is in outstanding shape, and he is very hungry, very anxious to play. I think there’s some pride involved. There is definitely some motivation there.” • Safeties coach Dave Merritt on who his starting safeties will be: “I have absolutely no idea.” It should be quite a battle between James Butler, Michael Johnson, first-round pick Kenny Phillips and veteran Sammy Knight. Merritt also sounded excited about two undrafted free agents - Nehemia Warrick and Terrance Stringer. • Running backs coach Jerald Ingram, on whether Brandon Jacobs was still the team’s No. 1 running back: “I mean in all fairness you have to start over. They all have something to give. They all contributed in their own way. You’re looking at for the most part that they’re all competing for the same job. The game plan in trying to figure out what they can do for us depends on who we are playing. And as Kevin (Gilbride) said, ‘Whoever has the hot hand and whoever is ready to play.’ That’s what gives these guys motivation.” • What is TE coach Mike Pope ...
