The success of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Omaha has proven time and again to be a great site for big sporting events. Of course the College World Series has been there for a long time. In more recent years, the Qwest Center has been the site for an NCAA Regional and Final Four in volleyball as well as first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games. Those are just a few of the biggest events the Qwest has hosted over the past few years. "Field of Dreams" made the saying, "Build it, and they will come" famous. Well, Omaha built the Qwest Center and they are coming. They came from all over for the Olympic Trials the past week. Hundreds of swimmers, their families and other swimming fans flocked to Omaha to watch the best swimmers in the world. Nine world records were set during the eight-day meet, and although the Qwest didn't sell out, it came awfully close for most of the finals sessions each day. The swimmers certainly appreciated the venue. So did Grand Island Senior High swimming coach Brian Jensen. Jensen was a volunteer throughout the trials. His job was to, "make sure the swimmers have everything they need." Jensen said U.S. swimming hasn't seen anything like the Qwest Center. "It's probably the greatest venue ever for swimming in the United States," Jensen said. "It's indoor, which is nice. It has a lot of room for the fans. the hotel is close.
