The Barack Obama campaign plans to officially open a field office in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday and has invited the public to attend the grand opening. A new office in Gainesville also will be opened. Just a few weeks ago, you could hardly find Obama campaign staff anywhere in Florida. Now resources are flowing into the state, fueled by big campaign contributions. Obama’s haul last month reached $52 million nationwide, including nearly $1.3 million from Florida donors. Some political observers wondered whether Obama would seriously contest Florida, a state that has voted Republican in six of the last seven presidential elections. The sudden appearance of campaign staff and offices indicate he really does hope to win Florida, or at least force John McCain to spend time and money to defend a must-win state for Republicans. The campaign plans to unveil the Fort Lauderdale office at 5 p.m. on Thursday at 733 NW Sistrunk Boulevard. Staff and volunteers will be on hand. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Admission is first-come, first-served. ...
