Barack Obama is trying to shore up support from Jewish voters who have tended to favor Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. His pitch foreshadows an expected campaign trip to South Florida, home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the world. Obama While attending an event last night sponsored by the Israeli embassy, Obama vowed to help ensure Israel’s security and prosperity. The Democratic front-runner also told CNN he considers Hamas ``a terrorist organization’’ and that ``we should not negotiate with them unless they recognize Israel, renounce violence and unless they are willing to abide by previous accords between the Palestinians and the Israelis.’’ A nationwide Gallup poll released this week indicates that Jewish Democratic voters favor Clinton over Obama by 50 percent to 43 percent. A similar pattern emerged from voting in the Florida primary on Jan. 29, when large numbers of Jewish retirees turned out for Clinton. In hypothetical matchups, the Gallup poll found that Jewish voters nationwide favored Clinton over Republican candidate John McCain by 66 percent to 27 percent. They favored Obama over McCain by 61 percent to 32 percent. One of Obama’s most prominent Jewish backers took heart from the poll.
