 Following moves already made by its competitors, Northwest Airlines is moving to cut some 2,500 jobs and generate revenue, because of …you guessed it… fuel costs. Looking to keep up with industry demands, NWA will slash just over 8% of its work force, and charge passengers to check bags and redeem frequent flier miles. Already in buy-out negotiations with Delta Airlines, for a deal to be done by November, Northwest is looking to add $250-300 million in revenue. As the industry reports to face losses that total $13 billion for the year, nearly 20,000 jobs will be cut by the end of 2008. Northwest CEO, Doug Steeland points to fuel costs that have more than doubled as the main factor plaguing the nation’s airlines. With fuel currently at $140 a barrel, the airline industry projects fuel costs to total $61.2 billion for the year. So as passengers think twice about taking trips with high fares, costly luggage, and not-so-free flights.
