Starting right-hander John McKenna wanted the burden of last night's game to lie on his shoulders. The Algonquin senior-to-be who started last night's Zone 4 playoff tilt for sixth-seeded Northborough made that clear during the game, despite some early difficulty. "He's a competitor out there," said Post 234 manager Mike Mocerino. "He's a battler. He came up to me and said 'I want this game,' and when we took the lead, I let him go get it." After a rough start that saw visiting No. 7 Auburn jump out to a 3-0 advantage through three innings, the Northborough ace settled in and was effective the rest of the way, allowing Post 234's offense to get going and earn a 6-3 decision in Game 1 of a three-game set with Post 279 in the first round of the Zone 4 playoffs. Northborough (15-8) will attempt to sweep the series tonight when it travels to Auburn High (7 p.m.). McKenna struggled to get outs in the early going, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks by the third inning. He also threw 70 pitches by the time he took the hill in the fourth. "I struggled a bit early and was leaving a lot of fastballs over the plate," explained McKenna. "I just wasn't really locating very well early on and they were hitting. I settled down after that though." McKenna was nothing short of dominant from the fourth inning on, shutting out an Auburn offense that mustered just four hits and a walk for the final four innings.
