North Carolina's Kyle Shelton hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie the score and the Tar Heels scored three more runs in the seventh to beat Winthrop 4-1 on Tuesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Shelton and Garrett Gore each had two hits to lead North Carolina (43-9), which claimed its eighth straight non-conference win. North Carolina's Kyle Seager, who starred at Northwest Cabarrus, singled to lead off the seventh inning, and Tim Federowicz followed with a double to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead. Gore followed with a bunt single that Winthrop second baseman Aaron Bonomi threw wildly to first, allowing Federowicz to score North Carolina's third run. Seth Williams then singled to put runners on the corners, and pinch hitter Mark Fleury reached on an RBI fielder's choice to drive in Gore and give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead through seven. Rob Wooten (5-1), one of eight Tar Heels to take the mound, earned the victory against Winthrop (22-31). Eddie Rohan and Bryn Henderson each had two hits for the Eagles. No. 7 GEORGIA 3, GEORGIA TECH 2: Nick Montgomery pitched five strong innings in his first career start to lead the Bulldogs (34-17) at Georgia Tech (36-16). No. 20 N.C. STATE 17, N.C. A&T 6: Pat Ferguson, Matt Payne, Marcus Jones and Dallas Poulk each homered and drove in a combined 13 runs to pace the host Wolfpack (36-16) against the Aggies (27-28).
