COLDWATER — In what many had thought would be a close vote, former assistant prosecutor Terri Norris on Tuesday was elected as the next prosecutor. The vote was 3801 to 1922. The prosecutor race has been intense, with Kashian rolling out superior numbers regarding trial experience and challenger Norris hammering away with the phrase  “working” prosecutor, which she said could reduce staffing in the office and save taxpayer money. Norris, who went to law school nights while working and raising two children as a single mother, said she is no stranger to hard work, and Kashian has repeatedly answered the phrase during the campaign by saying, “I am a working prosecutor.” The two touched on plea bargaining, with Kashian maintaining he has kept to his original pledge two campaigns ago to not plea bargain on the day of the trial. Norris said she understands plea bargaining is a necessary aspect of the judicial process, since “we can’t try all the cases.” “We need a more efficient handling of cases,” she said. Besides pointing to the fact that he has tried cases in all courts, with the experience of former assistant prosecutor Norris limited, Kashian also pointed to his establishment of restitution and victim advocacy as well as extensive community involvement, such as in the Meth Task Force, now the Substance Abuse Task Force.
