Filed under: Chicago , Cubs , NL Central , MLB Transactions That's really the only excuse for the debacle that is Jim Edmonds -in-pinstripes. When the signing was finalized, the only thing any reasonable observer could say was, well, apparently no one on the Cubs has seen Jim play lately. They'll see him soon enough. And guess what? Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella basically admit as much . Emphasis regrettably mine: [Hendry]: "The people we had watch him in their normal coverage- we weren't scouting him -felt he was getting better right before he was [released]. We'll see." Some believe Edmonds has lost a step in the outfield, though Piniella said he hadn't seen him play since last summer. "I don't know," he said. "We're going on past history and we're going on what our scouts say. That's it. We're going to give him an opportunity ... and we'll go from there. That's all we can do." To be fair, the various quotes from Hendry and Piniella make me believe it was Piniella who pushed for this signing, and Hendry agreed to it to keep his manager happy. Hendry is giving plenty of "well, we'll see, he'll have to play well, no risk blah blah blah" standards. I'm cool with that; Hendry seems to get it, and Edmonds is apparently on a short leash. Fine. But Piniella keeps talking about "past history," which I can only take to mean that Lou still thinks it's 2004. Not to mention this little gem: he's probably going to put Ji ... |
