When Super Smash Bros. Brawl launched in the US 3 months ago, problems began to surface with some Wiis getting disc errors when trying to read the dual-layered game disc. Nintendo have denied that this is problem with the drive, but is instead due to buildup of smoke and dust on the disc lens. Although this news is nothing new, the launch of Brawl in New Zealand will reveal concealed problems with some Wii disc drives at a time when there is no certainty about who will provide warranty service. While the US and Canada have a repair process in place, the New Zealand Nintendo website (incorporated into the Nintendo of Australia website) has no mention of this known fault even though it has been recognised for over 3 months. Since the demise of the Nintendo distributor in New Zealand, there have been reports of retailers themselves being unsure of the process for warranty repairs for Nintendo products. Anyone who is aware of the SPI receivership is understandably reluctant to send their Wiis for repair via the retailer, given this uncertainty. There is also the issue of paid downloaded content - a direct replacement by the retailer will not transfer this content to the new console. Have you been affected by this problem?
