By Ilhaam Hoosain 04 June 2008 Nigerian president Umaru Yar’Adua is in South Africa for a three day state visit. This is the first visit the president has made to SA since he was elected president last year. On his visit President Thabo Mbeki has apologised for the recent attacks on foreign nationals in the country. Its been reported that Nigeria has more bilateral trade agreements with South Africa than with any other country in the world, and trade between the two countries is worth R17 billion but most of these agreements are yet to yield results. Mbeki says a team of business people should be set up to investigate the reason for this. “We have agreed that one of the principle challenges we face, is really implementation of the many agreements that we have reached between the two countries. "There is no obstacle to the further strengthening of these relations except this point about ensuring that both countries and both governments act together quite vigorously to implement these agreements,” says Mbeki. He also adds that it is important to strengthen the partnership between South Africa and Nigeria in the interests of both countries and in the developments on the continent.
