“The Wire: Season Five” Rated MA The Emmy Awards’ nominating committee took its long, slow march to irrelevancy over a cliff last month. Not even after its final season could “The Wire,” HBO’s best drama ever (yes, even beyond “The Sopranos”), get at least a cursory nomination for Best Drama. True, the final season’s potshots at the plight of the modern American newspaper were a bit of simplified sour grapes from Simon, based on his own run at the Baltimore Sun. But even at its iffiest, this complex drama about cops, criminals and politicians was unrivaled. Extras include six audio commentaries, a documentary and a series retrospective. “Smart People” Rated R Set in the same city (Pittsburgh) and academic environment as “Wonder Boys,” “Smart People” has strong performances from Dennis Quaid, Ellen Page and Thomas Haden Church. Yet, it confuses meaning for the maudlin. Quaid is a college professor and widower who’s retreated into the tenured comfort of his work. When he suffers a seizure and has driving privileges taken away, he must rely on his lazy adopted brother (Church) to be his chauffeur. He also stumbles into dating his doctor (Sarah Jessica Parker), much to the consternation of his Young Republican daughter (Page). DVD and Blu-ray extras offer commentary, deleted scenes, interviews, a featurette and outtakes.
