Teachers will have to show evidence of their literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology (ICT) ability before they can take a position in a school, say new guidelines. Produced by the Institute for Learning, with the support of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, Lifelong Learning UK and Standards Verification UK, the report notes that a key requirement within professional formation will be the development of personal skills. Without this, teachers will not be granted licensed practitioner status by IfL. This process is due to be launched in September of this year, with work taking place now to find suitable qualifications and assessments. The position statement outlines that trainee teachers will all need to undergo an assessment of their literacy, numeracy and ICT knowledge. All providers of teaching training must ensure that they work to develop important personal skills in their students, it is stated.
