The New Orleans’ Saints pursuit of Jeremy Shockey is dead. At least, “for the most part.” That’s the status, according to Saints GM Mickey Loomis, who appeared on Sirius NFL Radio’s The Sirius Blitz on Wednesday afternoon with Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots. Schein asked him “How hot and heavy did the talks get? Was it ever close? And are you still talking to the New York Giants about getting him?” Here’s what Loomis said: “It’s no secret we had some discussions with them and ultimately we just couldn’t come to a conclusion on the right compensation. And that would explain why Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and Kevin Gilbride would only commit to Shockey being the Giants’ starting tight end “right now.” But while Loomis does appear to be keeping the door ajar, it still would take a first-round pick (or S Roman Harper) to get the deal done. He wasn’t willing to do that before, and it sure doesn’t sound like he’s willing to do it now. ...
