Now unless you're a big hard drive/RAID geek, chances are you're like me and haven't heard about the latest thing in snazzy storage techmology -- the Drobo. Basically the idea here is to use a big, standalone RAID enclosure to let you store a bunch of data easily, and makes additional drives simple to add on. As Macworld 's review from last year notes: While it won't rescue your kitten from a tree or your data from a burning building, the Drobo will allay your fears about the safety of your data. And with the Drobo, adding more hard drive space is like building a new wing onto your house without disturbing the contents of any of the existing rooms. Apparently one of the big complaints of the first-gen Drobo was that it only had USB 2.0 support, which isn't exactly the speediest of protocols. Data Robotics, the makers of Drobo, heeded the call and is now adding FireWire 800 to the mix. Engadget adds: The price stays the same at $500 for the device itself, and (as before) you can buy it bundled with two 1TB drives (for $900) or four 1TB drives (for $1,300). For those waiting for the price to dip even lower, Data Robotics is also clearing out inventory on its earlier model; until they sell out, first-gen Drobos will be going for $350, or $750 and $1,075 bundled with two and four 1TB drives, respectively.
