| Neil Diamond's latest album, "Home Before Dark," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart when it came out in May, marking the first time any of his albums entered the charts at the top spot and making Diamond, 67, the oldest artist to debut at No.1. That and other aspects of Diamond's life and career provided lines of inquiry this afternoon when music reporters around the country gathered 'round their phones to take turns flinging questions at Diamond in advance of his upcoming tour, which stops Aug. 7 in Hartford. Among the high points: The guy from the Cleveland Free Times asking Diamond if he was consciously trying to reinvent himself on his past two albums. "No," Diamond replied. "I like the way I was invented originally." Diamond musing on "Home Before Dark" hitting No. 1: "It's nice that in this market full of young people, that seems to be aimed at young people, an old geezer can come along and knock some of them off their perches." The woman from the Green Bay paper quickly discovering her question was based on a shaky premise: "By all accounts, your concert in this city will be the first time you've played here," she began. Neil interrupted, saying, "Actually, it's not." Turns out he has fond memories of performing in Green Bay in the late '60s, thanks to the aura of Vince Lombardi and the Packers.
