The cost of the Government’s National Programme for NHS IT has been estimated at £12.4bn. This eye-watering sum is not the only problem with the scheme. It is an intrinsically ill-conceived programme, mistakenly trying to impose a grandiose monopoly solution from on high, rather than allowing simpler, competing systems to evolve. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that the National Audit Office has now claimed that the system will come four years later than expected. Tony Collins of Computer Weekly says that : “Ministers are discovering that an IT-based scheme conceived at the centre cannot be imposed on a devolved NHS - a lesson that should have been learned from failures in the 1990s.” He is right.
